Chandan Dass

Chandan Dass

Chandan Dass is a popular ghazal singer in the mould of Mehdi Hassan.

Born in Calcutta in March 15, 1956, he was trained in classical music by Ustad Moosa Hussain Khan, Amanat Ali Khan and Fateh Ali Khan. Fateh Ali Khan's ghazal knowledge helped Chandan a lot.

Since his family didn't like him to take up music as a profession, he left his house and went to Patna, where he worked in A.I.R. for five years. He used to listen to Mehdi Hassan's tapes and imitate him.

He later moved to Delhi, a better place for aspiring ghazal singers. He started singing in hotels for a living. The famous ghazal singer Talat Aziz heard him once and introduced him to Polydor, the label he was working with. Chandan still treats Talat Aziz as his mentor.

His first album Introducing Chandan Dass was released in 1982. He has since then released about 15 albums. He has also sung in some films and TV serials.
