Lata Mangeshkar (born September 28, 1929) is India's foremost female singer. Focusing mainly on Hindi and Marathi film music (playback singing), she has sung more than 50,000 songs in over twenty major Indian languages. It is a voice that no Indian can miss. Delightfully high, the notes rendered clearly to the last bar, the words pronounced with a rare panache - the voice has haunted Indians for the over five decades.

Lata Mangeshkar is only the second Indian singer to have received the Bharat Ratna, India`s highest civilian honour. The Royal Albert Hall, London has recorded the graph of Lata's voice with the help of a computer which is by far the "Most Perfect" in the World.

Although Lataji attended school for a day, she has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by 6 universities including the New York University. *After India’s losses in the India-China war in 1962,Lata had sung the song, Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon, Zara Aankh Me Bhar Lo Pani. The song, moved the then Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to tears and he confessed 'Beti toone mujhe rula diya'.
