Purbayan has learned Sitar from his father Parthapratim Chatterjee- disciple of Pt.Nikhil banerjee and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Purbayan’s music is inspired by the sound of Pt. Nikhil Banerjee. His music combines the tone and richness of the Nikhil Banerjee style and contemporary touch of his own urbane sensitivity he is also an vocalist in his own right. Purbayan is the mastermind behind Shastriya syndicate, the one of a kind Indian classical music band. With five friends, each an exponent of a traditional instrument, he has tried to bridge the gap between classic and continuous time.
